Honor 5C Hands On Review

We spent some time with the Honor 5C and here is our hands on review of Honor’s latest budget smartphone:

Design

The design of the 5C is reminiscent of the Honor 5X. The Honor 5C, however, is a step below the 5X with a lower price tag. Looking at the device, it doesn’t look like a budget phone. It comes with a 5.2-inch full HD display with on screen navigation buttons. Above the display, there are sensors along with earpiece, front camera and LED notification.

On the bottom edge, you get microphone, USB charging port and speaker grill.

Volume rockers and power button are located on the right edge.

The 3.5mm audio jack sits on the top edge.

Honor 5C (10)

On the rear, it features brushed metal design that gives it a premium look. The sides are made up of plastic with a texture on it which goes well with the brushed metal design.

Fingerprint sensor is located on the rear, below camera module. The fingerprint sensor is pretty fast and accurate in unlocking the phone. Besides unlocking the phone, you can swipe on the sensor to browse photos or to bring down the notifications panel. Overall build quality of the phone is good. It is a compact phone that looks premium and can be comfortably held with a single hand.

Display

It features a 5.2-inch full HD display with 1080p resolution. The display is sharp, vivid and bright. The viewing angles and sunlight legibility of the display are good. This device is perfect for watching videos and playing games. The swipe experience however is not very smooth. Overall display quality is good and it is one of the few phones in this price range to offer full HD display.

Camera

In camera department, the Honor 5C sports a 13 mega pixel primary camera with LED flash. There is also an 8 mega pixel front facing camera. The camera app launches quickly and it also allows you to capture in a second by pressing volume key.

The camera app comes with a lot of modes such as Beauty, Good Food, Light Painting and even Pro Manual settings for photo and video recording. It also offers a lot of filters like Mono, Impact, halo and Dawn among others. The rear camera takes nice images with good sharpness and color reproduction. The front shooter also does a decent job in capturing selfies. This device produces good quality images with both front and rear cameras.

Hardware & Performance

At the heart of the device, lies the octa-core Kirin 650 processor paired with 2GB of RAM. It houses 16GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. On testing the phone on AnTuTu benchmarks, we got scores of around 53,000. This phone handles gaming, multitasking, watching videos and web browsing with ease.

Honor 5C (20)

We didn’t face any heating issues with this phone, even after extended usage and the credit goes to the Kirin 650 chipset which is based on 16nm fabrication instead of the 28nm process which is common with smartphones in this price range. The high-performance 16 nm processor delivers super-fast performance with reduced power consumption. Overall performance of the phone is great for a phone in this price range.

Honor 5C (15)

Software

On software front, the device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system wrapped under EMUI 4.1. The interface is smooth and intuitive. It lacks an app drawer but that really doesn’t bother us much.

Honor 5C (21)

It offers features like scroll shot and also allows to change EMUI icons by switching themes. We also tested it for USB OTG and found that the unit that we have received doesn’t support USB OTG.

Honor 5C (22)

Battery

Powering the phone is a 3000mAh battery which helps it survives for one full day without struggling.

Additional Features

The Honor 5C also offers high quality RF performance. It features automatic band switching technology which is optimized for superior network performance.

Price & Availability

The Honor 5C is priced at Rs. 10,999 and will be available to buy exclusively from Flipkart and Honor’s official e-store, HiHonor.com. First flash sale will take place on 30th June, 2016 while registrations will start from 22nd June at 2:00PM.
