Huawei P20, P20 Pro Launched With FullView Displays, AI Camera Features

Huawei has finally launched two new P2-0-series smartphones. The new handsets feature AI-powered camera features. The optics on the camera-focussed devices are co-engineered by Leica. Additionally, both smartphones feature ‘nature-inspired’ pearlescent effects. It gives the phone a different color depending on the angle it was viewed from. Price EUR 649 (approx Rs 52,200)

The Huawei P20 is priced at EUR 649 (approx Rs 52,200). Whereas the P20 Pro comes with a price tag of EUR 899 (approx Rs 72,300). Both smartphones come in four color options – Graphite Black, Midnight Blue, Pink Gold (gradient), and Twilight (gradient). As of now, there is no information about an Indian launch date or availability.

Both the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are powered by an octa-core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor (4 x 2.36GHz Cortex-A73 cores + 4 x 1.8GHz Cortex-A53 cores) with a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit). The NPU is said to offer up to 60 percent better system response speed, up to 50 percent smoother operation, and AI-based noise removal on call. Huawei also claims that the NPU acceleration works with Android Messages (new Google-made RCS-based default messaging app on the Huawei phones).

The Huawei P20 sports a 5.8-inch RGBW FullView display with full-HD+ (1080 x 2244 pixels) resolution and a peak brightness of 770 nits. The large display comes with smaller bezels and an iPhone X-like notch design. The home button also supports ‘edgeless fingerprint’ and gesture support.  on the home button, such as short tap for a back, long tap for home, and swiping left or right for multi-tasking.

The new handset comes with IP53 rating (dust and water resistance). It is supported by 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The 3400mAh battery (with support Huawei SuperCharge fast charging) offers up to 75 hours of continuous music playback.

In terms of optics, the Huawei P20 uses dual rear camera setup with large 1.55-micron pixels. It combines a 12-megapixel RGB 1/2.3-inch sensor (with a f/1.8 aperture) and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor (with a f/1.6 aperture). The 24.8-megapixel front camera also comes with a 3D portrait lighting effect.

Huawei P20 Pro

The Huawei P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch OLED FullView display with full-HD+ (1080 x 2240 pixels) resolution, 1:1,000,000 contrast ratio and a 105 percent color gamut. While design elements remain the same as the P20, it comes with 6GB RAM. The 4000mAh battery (with support Huawei SuperCharge fast charging) provides up to 89 hours of music playback. It comes with an IP67 rating (dust and water resistance).

The premium variant sports a triple rear camera setup. It combines an 8-megapixel sensor (with 3x optical zoom) with a 40-megapixel RGB 1/1.7-inch sensor and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. The company claims that a laser transmitter and receiver between the larger lenses helps in quicker autofocus. The triple camera setup has a light sensitivity up to ISO 102400 (same as the Canon 5D Mark IV). Huawei claims that the new handset has the most powerful zoom on a smartphone. Apart from 3x optical zoom, the P20 Pro also offers 5x lossless hybrid zoom and 10x digital zoom. It also features a 24.8-megapixel front camera.

The dual-SIM smartphones run Android 8.1 Oreo operating system with EMUI 8.1 on top. Both handsets support Google ARCore and feature a customized Google Assistant. Both smartphones come with a 360-degree Face Unlock feature that unlocks the devices in as little as 0.6 seconds.

The company also launched Huawei Share 2.0 feature. It helps in easy sharing between phones and PCs with up to 96Mbps transfer speeds over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Whereas a Huawei Phone Clone app helps users migrate between smartphones.

Additional features include Huawei Health app (features TruScreen heart rate monitoring, TruSleep technology, and secured fitness data cloud storage), Huawei PC Mode, and wireless Hi-Fi audio. Both smartphones feature stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Dolby AC-4 audio.

Both the P20 and P20 Pro come with 4D Predictive Focus that offers instant focus with motion prediction, resulting in ‘zero shutter lag’. Huawei claims that the new smartphones support 6-axis stabilization and 960fps super slow motion video recording. Additionally, ‘Master AI’ scene recognition feature can recognize over 500 scenarios in 19 categories. While an AI-Assisted Composition helps with alignment and framing.
