Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Announced – Will It Power Xiaomi Mi 7, OnePlus 6?

Qualcomm has announced a successor to its Snapdragon 835 chipset. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor is expected to power upcoming Android flagship devices. The next-gen processor is expected to debut with Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi’s next flagship smartphones. This might include upcoming Galaxy S9, Mi 7 and OnePlus 6. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will be manufactured by Samsung using 10nm process (similar to Snapdragon 835). As per the announcement teaser, the new processor supports 360-degree video recording. It will support more immersive virtual reality content and offer better security. Additionally, the new chipset will come with support for gigabit LTE and better battery life.

Availability

Qualcomm claims that the new processor will debut in the first half of 2018. The Snapdragon 845 is expected to power high-end Android smartphones including Samsung Galaxy S9 (in some regions), OnePlus 6, and Google’s Pixel phones. Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun has already confirmed that the company’s next flagship phone (expected to be Xiaomi Mi 7) will be backed by Snapdragon 845 SoC. However, it is not clear if the Xiaomi will be launched in India.

Previously, Qualcomm unveiled Snapdragon 636 SoC in November this year. It is designed with the 14nm FinFet technology. The chipset features 1.8 GHz Octa Core Kryo 260 CPUs.The processor comes with support for assertive display and ultra-wide FHD+. Users will be able to capture high-quality images, thanks to Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP. The Dual 14-bit ISPs support up to 24MP (single or dual 16MP cameras). Other features include Zero shutter lag, autofocus, smooth Zoom etc.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 636 SoC comes with support for aptX, Aqstic audio, and QuickCharge 4 (20 percent faster, 30 percent more efficient than the previous generation, charge from zero to 50 percent in 15 minutes). The Qualcomm Hexagon 680 DSP is designed to provide battery-efficient enhancements to audio, video, and other heavy tasks.
