Xiaomi has launched a new premium smartphone in China. The new Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 comes with a stunning ceramic unibody, designed by Philippe Starck’s design studio. The normal edition Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is priced at 3,299 yuan (approx Rs 32,300) for 64GB variant and 3,999 yuan (approx Rs 39,000) for 256GB variant. Whereas the Mi MIX 2 Special Edition will cost you 4,699 yuan (approx Rs 46,000). The normal edition will be available in China from September 15 (pre-orders have already started). The special edition will come in November this year.
Unlike Mi MIX, the new model will be available in markets outside of China. While it won’t be available in the US, the new handset will be hitting the Hong Kong and Taiwan markets later this year. Xiaomi has a huge fan base in India, and the company would benefit from the huge demand of Mi smartphone in the country. As of now, it is not clear whether the company will bring the normal Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 in India or the Special Edition as well.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 sports a 5.99-inch display with a 2,160 x 1,080pixels resolution, pixel density of 403ppi, a DCI-P3 color gamut, and 18:9 aspect ratio (down from 6.4-inch screen with 17:9 aspect ratio on Mi MIX). It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor along with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. You can also go for a special edition of the new device with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The new smartphone is backed by a 3,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support (9V/2A).
On the camera front, the new Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 sports a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25um pixels, 4-axis optical stabilization, 5-piece lens, and f/2.0 aperture. It can record 4K/ 1080p video at 30fps, and 720p videos at up to 120fps. There is also a 5-megapixel front camera with for selfies and video calling.

The new Mi MIX 2 comes in two variants. While the normal edition features a metallic frame and a ceramic back, a special comes with a black or white ceramic unibody. The ceramic unibody is made through an extreme process and takes about ten days to finish. It measures 151.8 x 75.5 x 7.7mm, and weighs 185 grams.
Both editions feature a 18K PVD rose gold-coated camera rim and a fingerprint reader on the back. The piezoelectric actuator-based hidden earpiece on Mi MIX has been replaced with a conventional earpiece. The new handset features 12-percent smaller bottom bezel than the Mi MIX. Other features include an ultrasonic proximity sensor, facial recognition, hidden sound-guided speaker, and an infrared sensor.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 offers a great combination of high-end specs and premium design. The new handset bears a similar price tag as its predecessor. It remains to be seen how it affects the company’s rapid growth rate.
Xiaomi has also launched its new Mi Note smartphone at 2499RMB (approx Rs 24,500) for 64GB, 2899RMB (approx Rs 28,500) for 128GB and 2999RMB (approx Rs 29,250) for 128GB model. The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 comes with a 5.5-inch display, Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB RAM, a 16-megapixel front camera, and 3,500 mAh battery.
