Price $350 (approx Rs 25,000)

The new shoe concept will be available in the US at $350 (approx Rs 25,000). It was unveiled at the company’s “Future of Footwear” event. The new shoes will be available through Nike’s direct channels and retailers.

“It’s the start of a new day. It’s like we’re moving from footwear to firmwear. It’s like having two smartphones strapped to your two feet,” said Michael Donaghu, director, global footwear innovation, Nike.

As of now, there is no information about the Indian price and launch date.

The Nike Adapt Self-Lacing Smart Sneaker sports sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes. Nike will be able to get a full, personalized snapshot of its user’s performance.

“The advantages we’re looking to provide the athlete are so substantial that you’ll see a mass of people wanting to make use of those benefits,” said Michael Donaghu, director, global footwear innovation, Nike.

The concept shoe self-tightens to a users’ preference. It is adjustable via an app. There are no laces. The technology is can be updated through the app. Nike claims that the new product will need recharging every two weeks.

While Nike CEO, Mark Parker claims that new shoes are a ‘major step’ in the company’s new digital emphasis by embedding it into an actual product, it allows the comapny to capture more information about its users. It will be able to provide users with weekend warriors athletic tips, while also selling them more products.

However, the data-tracking capability comes with a privacy option. Users can choose to not share their data. However, they will miss out on a lot of the product’s capabilities.

Apart from smart sneaker, Nike is also opting for digital stores called ‘Houses of Innovation’. The first two locations (New York and Shanghai) opened two months ago. The company aims to blend online shopping with the in-person experience. However, users need to download the Nike app for using the new Nike stores.

The company is also promoting the NikePlus loyalty program. It claims that the members spend three times more than non-members. It remains to be seen how the company moves forward with its digital transformation.

The auto-lacing shoes were first introduced in 2017. The company sold a limited number of units at $720 (Nike’s most expensive shoes). The company plans to release more products with the Adapt technology, including running shoes, sportswear and lifestyle items.
