Samsung showcased the concept of the foldable phone back in 2013. The first flexible display prototype by the South Korean company was called Youm. Since then, the company has been trying to bring innovative displays to mainstream devices. It was first to bring curved edges. However, the excitement about the foldable display died off over the years with many dismissing it as a prototype.
Previous reports claimed that the innovative handset would be revealed before the arrival of the Galaxy Note 8. Now, President of Samsung’s mobile business, Koh Dong-jin has confirmed that the company is planning to bring a Galaxy smartphone with bendable screen technology in 2018.
“As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year. When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product,” said Koh Dong-jin. Earlier, he had hinted that the company has been working out design issues to build the foldable device. He also added that the release date will be pushed back if the technical challenges couldn’t be solved on time.
The much-awaited Galaxy smartphone with a foldable display has been certified in South Korea. The upcoming handset – bearing a model number SM-G888N0 – has now been spotted in a filing from the Korean National Radio Research Agency (NRRA). The new filing form lists the device as a ‘radio equipment for global LTE communication. Previously, the upcoming handset was spotted as a smartphone at the Wi-Fi Alliance. The new listing does not reveal any further details about the design of the smartphone.
According to previous concepts, the foldable display technology will allow users to seamlessly alter between a tablet and a smartphone. It will essentially work like a 2-in-1 tablet.
The long-awaited smartphone is speculated to be called the Galaxy X. Reportedly, the company has been working on the upcoming smartphone under the code name ‘Project Valley’.
