The much-awaited Galaxy smartphone with a foldable display has been certified in South Korea. The upcoming handset – bearing a model number SM-G888N0 – has now been spotted in a filing from the Korean National Radio Research Agency (NRRA). The new filing form lists the device as a ‘radio equipment for global LTE communication. Previously, the upcoming handset was spotted as a smartphone at the Wi-Fi Alliance.

According to recent leaks and rumors, the foldable display technology will allow users to seamlessly alter between a tablet and a smartphone. It will essentially work as a 2-in-1 tablet. It is tipped to sport a 7.29-inch display that will fold it into a smaller form factor (4.58 inch). The upcoming smartphone will use a newly developed material for the flexible cover windows.

In terms of optics, the Samsung Galaxy F Foldable Phone will sport a triple camera setup (a dual camera setup + third super wide-angle lens), similar to the upcoming Galaxy S10 series. It will come with 512GB internal storage.

While the upcoming smartphone is tipped to come with 5G support, it might not feature a fingerprint sensor due to technical constraints. It will come in a Silver color option. Additional features will include Bixby 3.0. The user interface will let users run up to three apps simultaneously via a mode called Multi-Active Window.

Conclusion

Samsung showcased the concept of the foldable phone back in 2013. The first flexible display prototype by the South Korean company was called Youm. Since then, the company has been trying to bring innovative displays to mainstream devices. It was first to bring curved edges. However, the excitement about the foldable display died off over the years with many dismissing it as a prototype.

Last year, DJ Koh confirmed that the Samsung foldable device will be a tablet that could fold into a smartphone. This will give users multitasking capabilities along with easy portability. He also added that the upcoming device will not be a ‘gimmick product’ that will ‘disappear after six to nine months after it’s delivered.’

Recently, the Chinese brand called Royole launched a foldable smartphone with a flexible display, called the Flexpai. The Royole FlexPai sports a large 7.8-inch AMOLED display that drops down to just 4-inches once folded.
