Vivo has launched the world’s first smartphone with an under display fingerprint sensor. The new Vivo X20 Plus UD comes with 4GB RAM and an octa-core SoC. It was first revealed the device at the CES 2018. The Vivo X20 Plus UD sports a 6.4-inch OLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and 4GB RAM. The 128GB internal storage can be further expanded via a micro-SD card.

In terms of optics, the new smartphone sports a dual-camera setup at the back. It combines a 12-megapixel primary sensor with a f/1.8 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The 12-megapixel front camera also comes with a LED flash. The new handset is backed by a 3905mAh battery with fast charging support.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD measures 165.2 x 80.02 x 7.35 mm and weighs 183.1 grams. It comes in a matte black finish. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, USB Type-C port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The highlight of the new smartphone is the under-display fingerprint technology (developed by Synaptics). Reportedly, the new fingerprint reader is slightly slower than the traditional fingerprint sensor, but it is expected to improve in future iterations.

The new technology will help smartphone manufacturers to bring cleaner designs with smaller bezels and enhanced security authentication.  OnePlus 6 is also rumoured to sport an under-display fingerprint sensor. The new technology might be the next trend in the smartphone market.
