Cupertino-based tech giant Apple revealed its iPhone and iPad operating system (iOS 12) at WWDC 2018 on 4th June 2018. Other than iOS 12, the Tim Cook-led company introduced many new features like ARKit 2 and Siri.

At the WWDC 2018 keynote, the company revealed all the devices which support iOS 11 and will be compatible with the iOS 12 update. The developer preview of iOS 12 is there on Apple’s developer portal. The public beta will be out in June 2018. The supported devices are iPhone 5S and later models, all iPad Air and iPad Pro devices, 5th generation iPad and other models, iPad 6th generation and later models, iPad Mini 2 and later models, and the iPad touch 6th generation.

WWDC 2018 Highlights

Siri Shortcuts:

The company’s digital assistant Siri has also been enhanced. Siri Shortcuts helps the assistant to more smarter than ever. It suggests actions depending on factors like time, location etc. Actions can be customized with the new Shortcuts app. Users can make a series of actions from other apps. It can be facilitated by pressing a button or voice command.

This promises developers that their apps can get enhanced by this new feature. Moreover, the digital assistant can provide on-demand ordering and fitness apps to send notifications based on location and usage patterns.

AR and ARKit 2.0:

Augmented reality is one of the biggest additions to iOS 12. The company has announced the ARKit 2 framework. It brings features like multi-user AR. Moreover, the kit brings compatibility for multiple users in the same AR environment. It is also equipped with improved face tracking, realistic rendering, persistent experiences and 3D object detection.

Photos:

iOS 12 has provided quite a few updates to the Photos app. Search Suggestions has been added to the application. It highlights key moments, important places, people, and categories of places from your library. The company has also indexed four million events which enables us to search the Photos app. Moreover, it reclaims photos from events that you might have gone to earlier.

App Updates:

In WWDC 2018, it was announced that Apple News has been updated with iOS 12. It has a new Browse tab which helps users to find new topics and publications. Moreover, the app in iPad will have a new sidebar to increase screen real estate for readers.

iOS 12 has also redesigned the Stocks app. iBooks has also got an all-new design. It is now named as Apple Books.

CarPlay:

CarPlay will now come with third-party navigation app support. It is Apple’s in-car software control system.

Messages:

WWDC 2018 revealed that this app will be receiving Tongue Detection and Wink support for 3D-based Animoji. The company is also including new Animoji characters like a koala and tiger etc.

Memoji:

iOS 12 has also rolled out Memoji. It features customizable 3D emojis to the iPhone X. It looks familiar to the AR Emoji on Samsung Galaxy S9.
