Xiaomi is reportedly working on the successor of its Mi 8 smartphone. Several details of the upcoming handset (dubbed as Xiaomi Mi 9) have already surfaced online. The Xiaomi Mi 9 will be launched at an event in China on February 20th.  It is tipped to be priced at CNY 2,999 (roughly Rs 30,400) for the 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant. The flagship handset will be showcased at MWC 2019 on 24th Feb. As of now, there is no information about the Indian price and launch date.

The company might also launch the Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition (with a quad-camera setup and a transparent back panel) at the same event. It is said to priced between CNY 3,499 (approx Rs 36,900) to CNY 4,999 (approx Rs 52,600).

According to recent leaks and rumors, the Xiaomi Mi 9 sports a 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080p) AMOLED display with a small notch. It will feature a glass back. The upcoming handset is expected to be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 855 processor (with an X24 LTE Modem) along with 6GB/ 8GB/ 10GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

In terms of optics, the Mi 9 will feature a vertically-aligned triple camera setup on the back. It will include a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 as the primary sensor, 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel tertiary sensor. The camera module is protected by a layer of sapphire glass that is claimed to be extremely durable and resistant to scratches. An LED flash is located between the first two camera sensors.

The primary camera utilizes 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology (extrapolates the 12MP count to an effective 48MP resolution). The 0.8-micron sensor comes with f/1.75 aperture and a 6-element lens configuration.

The secondary camera comes with a 117-degree field of view (FOV), f/2.2 aperture, auto-focus support, 6-element lens setup, 1.0-micron pixel size, and a ‘closed loop motor.’ It uses an anti-distortion algorithm and supports 4cm macro photography. Whereas the 12MP telephoto lens that supports 2x optical zoom. It comes with 1-micron pixel san ize, f/2.2 aperture, autofocus system, and a 6-element lens configuration.

For selfies and video calling, the handset will sport a 20-megapixel front camera with Sony IMX576 sensor and AI beautification features. The handset uses Laser Autofocus technology which uses a combination of PDAF and CDAF.

In the power department, the upcoming smartphone is said to be backed by a 3,500mAh battery with 27W (20V and 1.35A) fast charging support (no wireless charging support). Previously, it was expected to support 32W fast charging.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is likely to run Android 9 Pie operating system with MIUI 10 on top. Additional features will include support for 5G connectivity and an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Mi 9 is said to be 40% slimmer than the one on the Xiaomi Mi 8 (with an ultra-thin 3.6mm chin).

The flagship smartphone features a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with full-HD+ (1080 x 2248 pixels) resolution, an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and 88.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The new handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor along with 6GB/ 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The 3,400 battery supports Quick Charge 4.0+ technology.

In terms of optics, the Xiaomi Mi 8 sports a dual rear camera setup on the back. It uses two 12-megapixel sensors with 1.4-micron pixels, four-axis OIS, and dual pixel autofocus. Additional features include AI Portrait and AI scene detection. The 20-megapixel front camera comes with an f/2.0 aperture.

The dual-SIM smartphone runs Android Oreo operating system with MIUI 10 on top. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and USB Type-C. The handset measures 154.9 x 74.8 x7.6mm. A fingerprint sensor is placed on the back. Sensors on the device include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared, and a proximity sensor.
