Will Play Matchmaker, Facebook Dating Feature To Be Added Soon

Social networking platform Facebook will soon be setting us up for dates. The California-based company announced at its annual F8 developer conference on 1st May 2018 that it will be adding a dating feature to its app. Facebook dating feature hasn’t come as a surprise to us, as the company seems to be expanding every day, and with the introduction of dating apps everywhere, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to be placing his bet in a not so new territory.

Will Play Matchmaker, Facebook Dating Feature To Be Added Soon

On stage, Zuckerberg said that the Facebook dating feature was “for real relationships, not hookups.”

This is not a new territory for Facebook, as apps like Tinder require a user’s Facebook ID and certain details like photographs etc. The Facebook dating feature will let users make a dating profile which will be separate from their Facebook profile. A little heart icon will take a user to their dating profile. Facebook gave assurance that the dating profile won’t be visible to a user’s Facebook friends. It also won’t show in the News Feed. A user’s dating profile will have a first name. It will highlight a user’s interests and consist of some photos. Only users of the Facebook dating feature will be able to see other dating profiles.

Users can browse events near them. They can also browse groups involving things they are interested in, showing how many people meet to date. Potential matches will also be suggested based on shared interests, common things, and mutual friends. When a user finds someone they are interested in, they will have to choose a photo of theirs as a conversation starter. They will have a private chat with an inbox that’s connected to profiles but separate from Messenger and WhatsApp. The conversation is only restricted to texting.

Facebook Dating Feature: Access To A User’s Private Information

The American company is not ready to launch the feature yet. The company has said that more details will be shared after testing the feature. The service is expected to arrive soon within a year.

This announcement has put light on the personal data the company has entry to. As the feature will require the company to know information about our location and our interests.

Post-Cambridge Analytica, it seems that Facebook hasn’t dropped back yet. They are heading for more expansion if it means more user data. Moreover, the company will need to keep everything secure and safe including privacy to keep their Cupid role steady and ready.
