Royole FlexPai Launched As World’s First Flexible Smartphone

Chinese manufacturer Rouyu (Royole) Technologies has launched the first foldable smartphone with a flexible display. The new Royole FlexPai sports a 7.8-inch AMOLED display that drops down to just 4-inches once folded. Additional features include upcoming Snapdragon 8150 SoC, and up to 8GB RAM. Price $1300 (approx Rs 95,200)

The Royole FlexPai is priced at $1300 (approx Rs 95,200) for the base model- It comes in three variants – 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage, 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage, and 8GB RAM/ 512GB storage.

The foldable smartphone can be pre-ordered in Canada, Mexico and United States from Royole’s website. Additionally, the new handset will be available via a flash sale in China (for an initial promotional run). Shipping will start in late December. As of now, there is no information about the Indian price or launch date.

The new handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 processor (yet to be announced by Qualcomm) along with Adreno 640 GPU and 6GB/ 8GB RAM. The 128GB/ 256GB /512GB internal storage can be further expanded via a microSD card (up to 256GB).

In terms of optics, the Royole FlexPai sports a dual camera set up in the back (16MP primary sensor + secondary 20MP telephoto lens with a f/1.8 aperture). Camera features include optical image stabilization (OIS). The single-camera module can be used for taking selfies when unfolded and as a rear camera when folded.

The new smartphone is backed by a 3,800mAh battery with support for 5V/5A fast charging via their proprietary Ro-Charge technology. The Ro-Charge fast charger can charge the device up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

The Royole FlexPai runs on an Android Pie operating system with a custom skin on top. The new Water OS adapts to the hinge and switches to a smartphone-like orientation, once the device is folded in half. The foldable smartphone allows you to drag files from one window to another when in split-screen mode. It can also be used in ‘tent’ mode.

The dual-SIM smartphone measures 134 x 190.35 x 7.6mm and weighs 320g. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, and Wi-Fi. The FlexPai ships with a pair of USB Type-C headphones, a USB Type-C cable, a Type-C to 3.5mm cable, and a carrying case.

Design

When unfolded the Royole FlexPai looks more like a tablet. The large 7.8-inch AMOLED display drops down to just 4-inches once folded. Royole claims that the AMOLED display can withstand more than 200,000 open-and-shut movements. This means that barring any accidents, the smartphone cum tablet can last for years without suffering any kind of damage.

The Royole FlexPai has beaten Samsung and Huawei to become the first foldable smartphone. Recently, LG was also reported to be working on foldable display technology. Royole Corporation is a California based firm known for manufacturing flexible displays and related products.
