Chinese consumer electronics company Oppo will be going official with a sub-brand for India. The launch will be in collaboration with e-commerce giant Amazon. According to multiple reports, Oppo will launch the sub-brand to mainly compete with Xiaomi in the Indian market. The Oppo sub-brand will be available exclusively online only.

Jeff Bezos-owned Amazon has been running a banner stating, “A new partnership for the real me.” The banner also revealed that it will be only an Amazon-exclusive announcement. The advertisement doesn’t reveal what the announcement will be about. But the portrayal of listing promises something big.

The Oppo sub-brand alleged announcement might be something similar to the collaboration between Flipkart and Taiwanese company Asus. Flipkart has become an Asus premier partner and will sell all its smartphones including the new Asus Zenfone Max Pro. Basically, all the handsets meant, especially for Indian markets. With the Asus partnership, Flipkart announced their ‘Complete Mobile Protection’ programme. It is valid for a year and covers all possible damages in Rs. 49. The e-commerce will also be providing a national helpline number and home pickup and drop service. Both the companies have also signed a memorandum of understanding which has made the e-commerce portal the primary sales portal for Asus ZenFones. Both the companies will also partner to co-create new products for Indian markets.

The Oppo sub-brand will challenge Xiaomi in the budget range between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000– which is mid-segment. This plan is expected to lead to good sales and revenue. The company has also created a management team for the sub-brand. The Oppo sub-brand will only be sold online.

According to data from Counterpoint Technology Market Research, Chinese companies have their highest share even in the Indian smartphone market– 57%. Xiaomi leads the pack with 31% share.

The Chinese company has turned to a different strategy. Earlier Oppo spent a lot on marketing and promotions but now has cut channel commisions and margins. To control costs, the company has even removed its in-shop staff. The Oppo sub-brand is a big bet for the company and could very well change the tide in the mid-segment category of smartphones in the Indian market.
